You should use the one that’s right for your use case, but below is what I typically use on this site. Analytics and Statistics URL shortening services such as bitly and google provides much more than shortening the URLs. When you add Google Analytics tracking to an email campaign, we supply a default title for your campaign that will appear in your Google Analytics account and your tracking URLs.
Now you can go back to the tweet and paste the copied shortened link instead using the long link. You can comfortably shorten any link you want and even share it on other social media platforms, forums, websites etc. If a user renames a file, it breaks the links to the file.
In other words, if you can discover which half of your advertising isn’t working, you can focus only on the half that is working, you can literally double your profits. Maybe you want a simple URL to put in a print add, or want to be kind to mobile readers of your content.
Link shortening hides the final destination, so of course spammers have latched onto link shortening like a leech. There are no real extra features or services, so this is good choice if you just want to get the job done as fast and as smoothly as possible without all the extra fluff like signing in and CAPTCHAs and other stuff.
Example for event tracking using the newer API:
